Boston Peak*, Horseshoe Basin falls, and Ripsaw Ridge, North Cascades National Park

Horseshoe Basin
(Stehikan)

North Cascades National Park

1986

I have been to Horseshoe Basin in the Stehikan / Cascade Pass area of North Cascades National Park only once before, in 1986, on a backpacking trip where we spent one evening at the base of the Sahale glacier, and another down in the Stehikan valley at Cottonwood Camp. Horseshoe Basin is a side hike from the main Stehikan trail.

This spur trail leads to the cirque formed by Ripsaw Ridge and anchored by Boston PEak to the west and Mount Buckner to the east. Many waterfalls trickle down from Ripsaw Ridge above. Within the basin is an old mine, of which we did limited exploring.

* The peak on the left may be Sahale Peak. It may also be Buckner, but I really doubt it. If the ridge in the center is Ripsaw Ridge (and I believe it is), then it would seem to make sense that the peak on the left is Boston. However this photo was taken over 18 years ago and I can't recall my position with respect to where I took it. I've searched the internet and one very similar picture called this Mount Buckner. Please feel free to contact administrator2@warmsackstudio.org if you can offer a correction.
